Rodless CylindersNumatic Engineering is a leading distributor of pneumatic automation products and value add services. Rodless cylinders are typically considered a space saving device for the unique applications they perform. Rodless cylinders are utilized for cutting, packaging, material transfer and sliding door applications in a wide variety of industries that include food processing, glass, plastics, textile and electronics With rodless cylinders, the piston is connected to an external carriage by a mechanical or magnetic coupling system, no piston rod extends outside of the component. They are an ideal solution when a long stroke is necessary as they are unaffected by rod overhang or bending. They are perfect for confined areas, and can be mounted in any plane. Rodless cylinders can be easily mounted together, creating multi axis devices. Slides and grippers can be simply mounted to a rodless cylinder, creating simple “pick and place” systems. Rodless Cylinder-Types:
Magnetically Coupled Rodless Cylinders have rare earth magnets located on the piston and carriage. These magnets form a strong bond that holds the piston and carriage together. When the cylinder is actuated, the piston and carriage move back and forth as one unit. Magnetically Coupled Cylinders do not have a sealing band; this design keeps metal chips and other leak-causing contaminants from entering the sealing area of the cylinder. This design typically requires the support of a mechanically guided device along the entire stroke to support the load. Magnetically coupled systems result in durability and endurance, increasing the lifespan of the rodless cylinder. They are also relatively maintenance free and lightweight, making them easy to use. Magnetically Coupled Features:
Mechanically Coupled Band Style Rodless Cylinders commonly have a one piece piston and carriage. This requires a slot in the cylinder housing that is sealed with an inner and outer band system that keeps the compressed air in and the contaminants out. They are self supportive and allow for direct loading. They do not require additional guiding systems for many applications. This design does allow for the addition of linear guides, brakes (load-holding devices), valves and sensors that can be attached directly to the rodless cylinder. Band cylinders are internally lubricated to increase its lifespan. Mechanically Coupled Features:
